Health Insurance for Staffing Agencies: Real Benefits for Placed W-2 Workers

Contract workers ask about health insurance in the first conversation, clients expect ACA compliance, and most staffing agencies are too small to build a benefits program alone. Here is how staffing firms offer placed employees real health, dental, and vision coverage through an employer of record, at no cost to the agency.

The benefits problem in staffing is structural: your placed workforce changes weekly, spans states, and sits on thin margins that cannot absorb employer-paid premiums. Group plans are built for stable internal teams, not contractor populations. The employer of record model solves this, because the EOR employs thousands of workers across many staffing firms and can sponsor benefits at a scale no single agency reaches. When BOSS is the employer of record for your placements (the Self-Funded EOR and Complete Plans), every placed W-2 employee gets access to a full benefits program administered by Go Well.

What Placed Employees Can Enroll In

The program offers three medical options at different price points, all employee-paid through weekly payroll deductions. The entry plan is a Minimum Essential Coverage (MEC) plan covering preventive and wellness services at 100% plus unlimited 24/7 virtual urgent care at a $0 copay, starting at roughly $13 a week for employee-only coverage. A step-up MEC plan adds copay-based primary care, specialist visits, urgent care, labs, and $0 virtual behavioral health. The top option is a major medical plan with a $1,500 individual deductible that adds hospital, emergency, and maternity benefits. Beyond medical, employees can add dental, vision (VSP network), and hearing coverage, with extras like Rx discount cards, a LASIK benefit, and a mobile app for ID cards and claims.

What It Costs Your Agency: Nothing

Premiums are paid by the enrolled employee through payroll deduction, and administration is handled by BOSS and Go Well. Your firm adds a genuine benefits program to every W-2 placement without buying a policy, hiring a benefits administrator, or touching open enrollment. For recruiters, that changes conversations: “yes, you can enroll in health, dental, and vision starting at about thirteen dollars a week” is an answer that wins candidates from agencies that offer nothing.

ACA Compliance Comes With It

The Affordable Care Act’s employer rules apply once size thresholds are crossed, and staffing populations cross them fast. The entry medical plan is a qualified plan meeting the standards of Minimum Essential Coverage under the ACA, which keeps assignments compliant while giving workers real, usable care: preventive services, telehealth, and prescription discounts. Compliance stops being a reason to limit hours or placements. For the full picture of what BOSS carries as the employer, see our insurance guide for staffing agencies.

How Enrollment Works

Placed employees receive an enrollment link during onboarding and enroll online with Go Well at gowellenroll.com. Eligibility begins the first of the month following 30 days of employment for employees working 30 or more hours per week, and enrollment must be completed within the first 30 days of employment (after that window, the annual open enrollment in May is the next opportunity). Go Well handles plan questions, enrollment support, and coverage administration directly with the employee, so your recruiters are never in the benefits-administration business. Current BOSS employees can find the full enrollment kit, plan documents, and rates on our benefits page.

Staffing Benefits FAQs

Do staffing agencies offer health insurance to contract workers?

Most small agencies cannot sponsor group coverage for a changing contractor population. Agencies using BOSS as their employer of record can offer placed W-2 employees access to medical, dental, vision, and hearing coverage administered through Go Well.

What is a MEC plan?

A Minimum Essential Coverage plan is a qualified health plan meeting ACA minimum coverage standards. It covers preventive and wellness services at 100% and typically includes telehealth and prescription discounts, at a much lower weekly cost than major medical coverage.

What does the benefits program cost the staffing agency?

Nothing. Premiums are employee-paid through weekly payroll deductions, and administration is handled by BOSS and Go Well as part of the EOR service on the Self-Funded EOR and Complete Plans.

When do placed employees become eligible?

Eligibility begins the first of the month following 30 days of employment for employees working at least 30 hours per week. Enrollment must be completed within the first 30 days of employment, or at the annual open enrollment in May.

Can employees cover spouses and children?

Yes. Every plan offers employee-only, employee plus spouse, employee plus children, and family tiers, selected during online enrollment with Go Well.

Which BOSS plans include the benefits program?

Benefits access applies when BOSS is the legal employer of the placed workers: the Self-Funded EOR and Complete Plans. On the Core and Funded Plans your firm remains the employer and sponsors its own benefits if desired.
